Art in the Woods

For Art & Nature Lovers & Great Family Fun!

“Art in the Woods” will be held Aug 9 & 10 at the Jamestown Audubon Center & Sanctuary,
A beautiful 600-acre wetland preserve in Western NY. This is a wonderful, unique location to highlight the talents of local & national nature artists & fine craftsmen.

Living in the area are artist Janet Mandel and photographer Bill Smith who have volunteered & dedicated many hours, working along with the show committee and other generous people and business sponsors to create this enjoyable event . Janet and Bill will also be participants in the event. National artists and craftsmen will also be there in Jamestown for the Art Show. A rare opportunity to purchase art work from local & national award winning painters, carvers, woodworkers, jewelers, potters, & photographers.

The two days will include live folk music by John Bowler a Warren Pa. Native, a local jazz trio,
live performance by the Warren Players theatre group, artist’s demos, hands-on activities for children & food. Sunday morning enjoy a pancake “Breakfast with the Birds” which includes fruit stuffed pancakes, sausage & beverage.

Several artists are donating their time and material hands- on mini workshops.

SunDanceCreations.com jewelers Bob Culver & Joan DeSimone, who are also the show coordinators will be providing materials for jewelry making. Visit their booth and learn to create a pendant and take it home with you! There will also be activities for the whole family to participate in together. The Rhythm of Nature mini drum and shaker making workshop, using recycled material, is one of the many features of this show, An environmental message to recycle & respect the natural world. Everything has a pulse. We are all connected. Celebrate the end of each day of the event with a rhythm & drumming parade!

There will be awards for the 3 most unique rhythm makers each day of the event graciously provided by Craft World of Jamestown. All materials will be provided to create and have fun!

Visit Art in the Woods and enjoy artist representations of nature and the tranquil surrounding of nature at its finest. There are plenty of hiking trails to enjoy the wildlife and the calming waters of the wetlands.
The show will be held both indoors and outdoors rain or shine. Besides the many shade trees, tents will be provided outdoors for shade or rain.

The Audubon Center is a gem to be cherished and this weekend is about celebrating nature, the arts, creativity, & supporting the Audubon Center whose dedicated mission is preserving and connecting people to nature. Providing and protecting natural beauty for families of the future. The Jamestown Humane Society will also be there. The center is offering free booth space to them and other non-profit nature organizations.

  “Art in the Woods” will be held Aug. 9th & Aug. 10th. At the Jamestown Audubon Center & Sanctuary indoors and outdoors, rain or shine!

  A beautiful 600-acre wetland preserves in western NY State. This is a wonderful, unique location to highlight the talents of local and national nature artists and fine craftsmen.
Award winning painter, Janet Mandel, from Kennedy NY and talented Bill Smith, photographer, from Cherry Creek NY are two of the local artists participating in the show. Janet & Bill are also long time volunteers at the Audubon Center and have dedicated many hours, working along with the show committee to create this enjoyable event.

  National artists and craftsmen will also be coming to Jamestown. This is a rare opportunity to purchase art work and meet local and national award winning painters, carvers, woodworkers, jewelers, potters and photographers to name a few. Many of who will be demonstrating throughout the two days.
SunDanceCreations, award winning jewelers, Bob Culver and Joan DeSimone, who are also the show coordinators, will be donating materials and teaching time for jewelry making. Visit their booth and learn to create a pendant or earrings! Take the jewelry you make home with you!

  The two days will include live folk music by John Bowler a Warren Pa. native. John will sing songs written by some of his favorite musicians such as Simon and Garfunkle, Joni, Mitchell, and Kenny Loggins. Also enjoy live theatre performances by the Warren Players performing excerpts from the “Wizard of Oz” and ”Mother Goose” and a local jazz trio will be heating things up inside Sunday afternoon.
For family fun visit the children’s activity tent. The Rhythm of Nature mini drum and rattle making workshop is sure to keep the kids smiling! They can create their own instrument, all materials provided. At the end of each of the two days there will be 3 awards for the most unique drum or rattle. The awards were graciously donated by Craft World of Jamestown. The whole family and any age are welcome to participate in the workshop, create and have fun!

  One of the many features of this show is the environmental message to recycle and respect the natural world. Mini drums and rattle forms will be pre made by volunteers using recycled materials and available ready for all to decorate with beads, paints, ribbons, and a variety of other materials.
After the awards are given out, join drum leaders for a rhythm and drumming circle. Everyone is welcome to join in and celebrate the rhythm and “pulse” that is in everything in nature. Reminding us that we are all connected. Extra drums and rattles will be provided.

  Enjoy all the beautiful artwork, nature, and fun, and good food as well that will be available both days, and ….. a special “ Breakfast with the Birds” Sunday morning. Pancakes stuffed with strawberries or blueberries, sausage and beverage will be served 10:00 to 1:00. Cost for breakfast $5:00 per person.

 Folk guitarist  John M. Bowler a Warren native will perform live at “Art in the Woods” Festival on Aug 9th  & 10th from 1:30 to 3:30.  Held at the Jamestown Audubon Center & Sanctuary. Performances include Acoustic guitar instrumentals and folk songs. Breakfast with the Birds at  “Art in the Woods”

 Not just for the birds.      “ Breakfast with the Birds” will be part of the “Art in the Woods” Festival taking place Aug 9th & 10th.   at the Jamestown Audubon Nature Center.  Breakfast will be Sunday Aug. 10th

 Pancakes stuffed with strawberries or blueberries, sausage, juice and coffee or tea will be served from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Cost for breakfast  $5.00 per person.  Enjoy a walk around the beautiful nature trails before or after breakfast. Watch the colorful birds enjoying their breakfast at the many feeders provided for them at the Sanctuary.   Visit with nature artists, enjoy artists demos, live music & theatre  performers.  The Warren Players are one of the oldest theater groups in America. Participating in their 77th season this year! They are the resident amateur theatre company of the historic Struthers Library Theater, now celebrating it’s 125th year!  See the Warren players perform live Aug 9th & 10th at “Art in the Woods” festival at the Jamestown Audubon Center & Sanctuary.  Enjoy live performances from the “Wizard of Oz” on Saturday Aug 9th .   Also visit with “ Mother Goose “ reading stories, with help from her acting companions on Aug 10th .   Scheduled time 1:00 to 4:00 each day.

Nationally recognized artist for over 30 years, Janet Mandel, from Kennedy NY will be a participant at the “Art in the Woods” Art Show & Sale to be held Aug 9 & 10 at the Jamestown Audubon Center & Sanctuary. Her paintings of detailed wildlife , humorous cat portraits, nature fairies, songbirds and animal mandalas reflect her love and passion for the natural world . She has been a volunteer at the Audubon Center for many years. Bill Smith

Bill Smith from Cherry Creek, NY is a self-taught Nature photographer. Bill’s goal in making prints of his photos is to bring the viewer in to be an active participant in the composition and let him or her experience what he felt. He hopes these photographs bring to those who see them a heightened awareness of our natural world. He is part of the volunteer committee for Jamestown Audubon Center & Sanctuary ‘s “Art in the Woods” Art Show & Sale. A Celebration of Art, Nature, & Creativity
Close to Home!
At Jamestown Audubon Center & Sanctuary
 

There are many local artists along with artists represented from various states . Several artists are traveling hours or days from their homes to exhibit at the show. There will be painters, photographers, wood carvers, potters, jewelers and other artists all with different backgrounds and interests but all with one common goal, their love and appreciation of nature and wildlife. Each of them showing their vision in unique and beautiful creations that will be here to share with everyone who attends the festival.

Visitors of the show will be treated to an array of art, environmental education and entertainment seldom seen today, with activities for all ages in a setting that is both relaxing and beautiful. After visiting with the artists, walk wonderful nature trails throughout the Audubon centers extensive trail system. The “Warren Players” will be performing excerpts from “The Wizard of Oz” and “Mother Goose” around the grounds of the sanctuary.

Food will be available and can be enjoyed while listening to live folk music by Warren, PA native John M. Bowler and on Sunday afternoon there will be a local jazz trio heating things up inside. Some artists will be demonstrating at their booths while others will have hands-on demos where you can try your own hand at making a piece of art.

One children’s activity that will be sure to get your kids smiling is the drum and rattle making booth.
They can create their own instrument where at the end of each day there will be awards for the most unique creations. Following with a rhythm of nature drum parade where all be able to join in the fun!

 Bob Culver & Joan DeSimone to chair Audubon's

The Audubon Center & Sanctuary has announced the appointment of Bob Culver & Joan DeSimone as co-chairs of the upcoming Art in the Woods festival. This 2-day program of nature art, music, and delicious food will take place at the on the beautiful grounds of the Nature Center on Riverside Rd., Jamestown, New York.

 As event co-chairs, Joan and Bob will have responsibility for coordinating all aspects of the festival, including exhibiting artists, entertainment, vending, volunteers and publicity.

 "We are extremely grateful to Joan and Bob for stepping up to coordinate the show," said Ruth Lundin, President of the Audubon Center & Sanctuary. "Joan and Bob have years of experience in exhibiting at and coordinating these kind of events and we are very fortunate to have their leadership."

 Bob Culver & Joan DeSimone have been full-time artists exhibiting at shows throughout the Northeast for 20 years. They developed and coordinated a successful wildlife art show for the National Aviary in Pittsburgh from 1990 -1996. They also are on the boards of several shows in NY and PA and have previously exhibited at Audubon shows in the past.

 "Our goal is to create an event filled with talented artists and fine craftsmen, as well as musicians & local theatre groups, artists demonstrations and creative hands-on activities for visitors," said Joan DeSimone. "We'll be drawing heavily on our promotional experience to attract many visitors and nature art buyers to ensure a strong and sustainable event that will benefit the Audubon Center & Sanctuary, it's participants & visitors and planet earth for years to come." 

The show will feature nature artists and craftsmen from all over the country, as well as many talented local artisans. The event will also include earth friendly and environmental education groups, garden clubs, musicians and theater groups. The show will be held exclusively at the Audubon Center and a large portion will be held outdoors in its lovely natural setting.

 Ms. Simone and Mr. Culver's interest in creating, exhibiting and promoting nature art is based on their conviction to preserving the natural world.

 "Our jewelry creations are a tribute to nature and wildlife. We believe in the urgent need to save the environment, life & beauty on earth," said Culver. "We are naturalists with backgrounds in photography, art and nature illustration. We incorporate our knowledge and love of nature into our creations."

 In addition to overseeing the event, Culver and DiSimone will also be exhibiting their diverse selection of wildlife, nature, spiritual & cosmic jewelry at the Art in the Woods festival. They have also volunteered to present a free jewelry class during the event.

Audubon Center & Sanctuary to Present 2008 Art Festival

Drawing on its twelve year tradition of celebrating nature art, the Audubon Center and Sanctuary will present Art in the Woods on August 9-10, 2008. This 2-day program of nature art, music, and delicious food will take place at the on the beautiful grounds of the Nature Center on Riverside Rd., Jamestown, New York.  The Johnson Foundation provides lead sponsorship for this year’s event.

Painters, sculptors, carvers and artists from other disciplines will offer their creations in the natural setting of the Audubon Center & Sanctuary.  Round a turn and be delighted by musicians and strolling actors groups.

“Our nature center will not only present nature art in the most beautiful natural context, it will also will draw visitors and residents out into the beautiful Audubon Center,” said Ruth Lundin, President of the Audubon Center & Sanctuary. “We want visitors to bond with our center and return often.”

While most of the exhibitors will be outside, a small number of indoor booths will be available as well. Visitors will stroll the grounds and enjoy the works of many talented nature artists, as well as the wildlife that abounds in the sanctuary. 

Jamestown Audubon Society, Inc. runs the Audubon Center & Sanctuary on Riverside Road between Jamestown and Warren. Each year, over 18,000 school children and an equal number of visitors come to the Center or are taught by Audubon educators. In addition to programming, the 14,000 square foot facility provides interesting and informative exhibits for all ages. Art in the Woods will be a major source of funding for Audubon and its programs.

In 1992 the Audubon Center & Sanctuary in Jamestown, NY hosted its first nature art show at the Center’s location on Riverside Road. Since then the show has been a favorite for nature lovers, and art lovers alike. As the show grew, the Audubon Center teamed up with Roger Tory Peterson Institute and the Nature Art Festival was born. For several years this popular festival was held at various locations around the Jamestown area. However, the 2008 event will return to its original location at the Audubon Center & Sanctuary for a family festival including music, food and hands on art activities for all ages.
